About SSA to ASS
This converter reads SSA dialogue events and writes a new basic ASS document. Cue timing and text are transferred, while SSA override blocks, style definitions, positioning, and other source presentation data are not mapped. The output uses one Default style with fixed layout values.

SSA vs ASS Technical Specifications
SSA
SSA (SubStation Alpha) is a text subtitle script format that can contain script metadata, styles, dialogue events, override tags, and positioning. This converter extracts timing and text from supported Dialogue events.
ASS
ASS (Advanced SubStation Alpha) is a styled text subtitle format. This converter generates a standard ASS v4.00+ script with a single Default style, Arial 20, PlayRes 1920x1080, and basic outline and shadow values. Source SSA styling is not transferred.
Format Differences
Conversion Troubleshooting & Gotchas
Practical solutions for player compatibility, character encoding, and timing synchronization
Subtitle timing drifts or appears out of sync on media players
Video files frequently differ in framerate (e.g., 23.976 fps vs 25 fps). If the timing drifts steadily, use our Subtitle Sync tool to adjust the global offset or framerate stretch.
Characters appear as garbled symbols or question marks (Mojibake)
Legacy files saved in Windows-1252, Shift-JIS, or GBK may render incorrectly. Our exporter standardizes output to clean UTF-8. Use our Subtitle Encoding Converter if the source file is corrupted.
Overlapping captions when multiple speakers talk simultaneously
Different formats handle overlapping dialogue differently. If your target player cannot render stacked cues cleanly, open the file in our Subtitle Editor to adjust individual cue timings.
Video editing software (Premiere, DaVinci, Final Cut) rejects the file
Professional NLE software enforces strict syntax rules. Our converter eliminates malformed line breaks and non-standard tags, producing clean, standardized files.

Frequently Asked Questions
No. The parser extracts dialogue timing and text, then the converter generates one Default style. SSA style definitions, colors, fonts, margins, positioning, and override tags are not mapped to the new ASS file.
The generated file uses a Default style named Default, Arial at size 20, white primary text, black outline, and a 1920x1080 play resolution. You can edit these values in an ASS-capable subtitle editor.
Line breaks in parsed cue text are written as backslash-N line breaks in the ASS Dialogue event.
Override blocks enclosed in braces are stripped during parsing. Their effects are not recreated in the ASS output.
Dialogue timing is converted to ASS H:MM:SS.cc timecodes. Milliseconds beyond centisecond precision are truncated.
No. Font attachments and external font references are not carried into the generated ASS file.
