Core Processing Architecture

What Statistics Are Computed

Engineered for video editors and localization teams. Helps enforce common subtitle timing rules and formatting.

Total cue count and total duration in seconds.
Total characters and total words (word-counting adapts for CJK).
Average and maximum CPS (characters per second).
Average, minimum, and maximum cue duration.
Longest and shortest subtitle lines by character count.
Estimated language based on script analysis.
CJK character ratio for mixed-language detection.
Overlap count: how many cues overlap in time.

In-Memory Processing

File parsing, mutations, and time shifts for standard tools run in browser memory without sending subtitle files to our servers.

Millisecond Precision

Millisecond-accurate timecode parsing and arithmetic prevent synchronization drift across desktop and web players.

Fault-Tolerant Engine

Automatic multi-encoding detection and syntax sanitization gracefully handle malformed cues and unexpected linebreaks.

Who Needs Subtitle Statistics?

Real-world scenarios across video post-production, course transcription, and global localization.

SCENARIO #1

Broadcast QC

Check that subtitle CPS and cue counts meet delivery specifications before submission.

SCENARIO #2

Localization Teams

Estimate translation effort based on character and word counts across subtitle files.

SCENARIO #3

Fansub Groups

Track subtitle metrics like CPS and overlaps to maintain quality across releases.

SCENARIO #4

Content Creators

Verify that auto-generated captions have reasonable reading speed before publishing.

SCENARIO #5

Educators

Check subtitle readability metrics for online course videos.

SCENARIO #6

Accessibility Audits

Document CPS and timing metrics for WCAG and readability compliance.

Frequently Asked Questions

CPS (characters per second) measures reading speed. Subtitles with very high CPS are too fast to read comfortably. Common guidelines recommend staying under 15-20 CPS. The statistics tool reports both average and maximum CPS.

No. All analysis happens entirely in your browser. Your subtitle files never leave your device.

The tool analyzes the ratio of CJK characters (Chinese hanzi, Japanese kana, Korean hangul) to Latin characters to estimate the dominant language. This is a heuristic and may not be perfect for mixed-language files.

For CJK (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) text, each character is counted as a word since there are no spaces. For Latin scripts, words are split by whitespace. The tool detects the dominant script automatically.

Input: SRT, VTT, ASS, SSA, LRC, SBV, TTML, SCC, STL, SMI.

The statistics are displayed in the workspace. You can use the QA Report tool for an exportable full report that includes these metrics.
