Core Engine Architecture

Future-Proofing 1990s Subtitle Scripts

SubStation Alpha scripts carry styled dialogue in an [Events] section. This converter reads SSA Dialogue lines, strips override blocks, converts SSA timing to SRT timestamps, and writes a plain-text subtitle file for SRT-capable players. The conversion runs entirely in your browser.

SSA

SSA

SSA v4 (SubStation Alpha) is a subtitle script format with [Script Info], [V4 Styles], and [Events] sections. Dialogue lines use comma-delimited fields with possible inline override codes in curly braces. Timing is in centiseconds (H:MM:SS.cc). This converter reads UTF-8 input and can fall back to GB18030.

Output Format

SRT

SRT

SRT (SubRip) is a widely supported plain-text subtitle format. Each entry has a sequential number, a comma-separated timestamp pair with millisecond precision (00:01:30,500 --> 00:01:35,000), and plain text.

Format Differences

SSA is a styled script format. SRT is a widely used plain-text subtitle format.
SSA timing uses centiseconds (0:00:15.20). SRT timing uses milliseconds (00:00:15,200) with comma separators.
SSA override codes in curly braces are CRT-era formatting instructions. SRT has no inline formatting.
SSA V4 Styles section defines fonts and colors. SRT has no style system.
This SSA reader supports UTF-8 and GB18030 fallback. SRT output uses UTF-8.
SSA carries script structure and styling, while SRT focuses on numbered cues, timing, and text.

Conversion Troubleshooting & Gotchas

Practical solutions for player compatibility, character encoding, and timing synchronization

4 Common Gotchas
GOTCHA #1

Subtitle timing drifts or appears out of sync on media players

Video files frequently differ in framerate (e.g., 23.976 fps vs 25 fps). If the timing drifts steadily, use our Subtitle Sync tool to adjust the global offset or framerate stretch.

GOTCHA #2

Characters appear as garbled symbols or question marks (Mojibake)

Legacy files saved in Windows-1252, Shift-JIS, or GBK may render incorrectly. Our exporter standardizes output to clean UTF-8. Use our Subtitle Encoding Converter if the source file is corrupted.

GOTCHA #3

Overlapping captions when multiple speakers talk simultaneously

Different formats handle overlapping dialogue differently. If your target player cannot render stacked cues cleanly, open the file in our Subtitle Editor to adjust individual cue timings.

GOTCHA #4

Video editing software (Premiere, DaVinci, Final Cut) rejects the file

Professional NLE software enforces strict syntax rules. Our converter eliminates malformed line breaks and non-standard tags, producing clean, standardized files.

Features

Reads Start, End, and Text fields from SSA Dialogue lines
Strips override blocks from the dialogue text
Ignores SSA script metadata and style definitions
Converts SSA centisecond timing (0:01:30.50) to modern SRT millisecond timing (00:01:30,500)
Reads UTF-8 input and falls back to GB18030 when possible
Discards V4 Styles section with CRT monitor font definitions and color settings
Normalizes SSA line break codes to standard SRT newlines
Skips SSA Comment lines that contain original subtitler production notes

Why Convert?

Many common players and media servers support SRT more consistently than SSA.
Plain SRT text avoids exposing SSA override codes in players without SSA rendering support.
Video tools that accept SRT can use the converted timing and dialogue without the SSA style layer.
Removing style definitions and metadata often reduces file size.
SRT is a common interchange format for captioning and accessibility workflows.

How It Works

  1. 1

Upload your .ssa file by dragging it or browsing.

  2. 2

The parser enters the [Events] section and reads Dialogue lines.

  3. 3

Each Dialogue line is split into its expected Start, End, and Text fields.

  4. 4

Override blocks are stripped from the text.

  5. 5

SSA centisecond timestamps are converted to SRT millisecond timestamps.

  6. 6

Sequential entry numbers are assigned to each cleaned subtitle entry.

  7. 7

The SRT output is encoded as UTF-8 and ready for modern playback devices.

Frequently Asked Questions

SSA v4 (SubStation Alpha) is a styled subtitle script format using [Script Info], [V4 Styles], and [Events] sections. Dialogue lines carry timing and text, while override codes in curly braces can control rendering details such as font size, color, and positioning.

SSA is the earlier SubStation Alpha script format, while ASS is its Advanced SubStation Alpha successor with additional style and override capabilities. Both use similar Events and Dialogue structures, but this page accepts .ssa files.

All override blocks in curly braces are removed. The remaining dialogue text is kept, except that SSA line-break codes become standard newlines.

Some players do not render SSA styling or may show unsupported override codes as text. Converting to SRT removes override blocks and produces plain text, which many SRT-capable players can display directly.

SSA v4 uses H:MM:SS.cc format where cc is centiseconds (0-99). SRT uses HH:MM:SS,mmm where mmm is milliseconds (0-999). The converter multiplies centiseconds by 10. For example, 0:01:25.40 becomes 00:01:25,400 in SRT. Hours are zero-padded to two digits for SRT format compliance.

The reader expects UTF-8 and can fall back to GB18030 for many Chinese-encoded files. Other legacy encodings may not be decoded correctly; convert those files to UTF-8 with a suitable editor before uploading.
